Looking for a gym name? Below are 1,574 options across 28 niches, from strength and CrossFit to yoga, cycling, martial arts, recovery, kids, senior, and corporate. Under them: a 7-step framework for choosing one, the handle rules for Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, a trademark checklist, and the naming mistakes that force an expensive rebrand two years in.
Names are numbered straight through, so you can cite one by number, and no name appears twice.
How to choose a gym name: the 7-step framework
A strong gym name does three things in under 30 characters. It tells people what you do, it sticks after one read, and it stays identical across your domain and every platform you post on.
Step 1: Define your fitness philosophy
Start with one word that describes what actually happens in the room:
- Strength and powerlifting: iron, forge, plate, barbell, lift, heavy, rep
- CrossFit: box, WOD, forge, grit, metcon
- Yoga and Pilates: flow, still, mat, breathe, align, rise
- HIIT and cardio: pulse, sprint, burn, surge, beat
- Cycling: pedal, cadence, watt, ride, crank
- Running: stride, pace, mile, tempo, split
- Boxing and combat: ring, jab, hook, glove, fight
- Martial arts: dojo, belt, tatami, guard, kata
- Recovery: reset, plunge, thermal, stretch, rest
- Personal training: train, coach, build, move
- Hybrid: fusion, anywhere, studio plus stream

Step 2: Identify your target audience
Match the name to who walks through the door. "Femme Fitness Tribe" reads very differently to a 28-year-old lifter than to a 65-year-old strength athlete. Decide who you are talking to before you decide what to call yourself.
Step 3: Pick your naming style
Seven templates cover almost every gym name that works:
- Niche plus concept: IronForge, BoxPulse, YogaHaven
- Verb plus name: TrainWithSara, LiftWithMarcus
- Niche plus city: LiftLab.LA, MetconNYC
- Single-word brand: Equinox, SoulCycle (needs a brand-building budget)
- Owner name plus service: Sarah's Strength Studio
- Wordplay: Squat Goals, Flex Appeal
- Symbol or archetype: Phoenix Fitness, Iron Wolf
Step 4: Check domain and handle availability
Critical: if your handle uses a period, for example @iron.forge, your YouTube channel needs a different format, typically ironforge or iron_forge. Decide which is canonical before you launch, because changing it later splits your audience across two spellings.
Step 5: Run a trademark check
Use the USPTO's Trademark Search tool to check your name is not already registered in the fitness category, Class 41 services.
Registration starts at $350 per class. The USPTO retired the old TEAS Plus and TEAS Standard tiers on 18 January 2025 and replaced them with a single base fee, filed through Trademark Center. That $350 only applies if you describe your services using pre-approved wording from the USPTO's ID Manual. Write your own description, which most first-time filers do, and it becomes $550 per class.
Do this before you order signage, print cards or pay for a logo. A name you cannot legally use is worth nothing, and finding out after the shopfront is painted is an expensive way to learn it. Outside the US, check WIPO, the EU's EUIPO, and your national register.
Step 6: Test it with real people
- Say it out loud to three people
- Have them spell it back to you
- Ask whether it sounds like the gym you are describing
- Post it in two or three fitness groups and ask for honest reactions
- Run a 24-hour poll with your top three finalists
If anyone spells it wrong, rework it. Your name has to survive being said on a podcast and typed by someone who only heard it once.
Step 7: Future-proof for expansion
Avoid names tied to a single service if you might add others, tied to a single city if you might expand, tied to a trend that will date, or tied to your own name if you plan to sell or franchise.
If you have not mapped that growth yet, work through the gym business plan template first. The name should fit the three-year plan, not just the opening.
